Baucau, June 2006. Displaced family
The ICRC has been present in Timor-Leste for many years and continues to work with all parties concerned towards establishing an independent commission on missing persons to address the needs of the families of people missing as a result of the events between 1975 and 1999. Recently, the violent clashes that broke out between the police and military in April 2006 have forced tens of thousands of people to leave their homes to set up residence in makeshift camps or stay with relatives. The ICRC and the Timor Leste Red Cross Society (CVTL) are providing emergency assistance to these civilians by ensuring the water supply, improving sanitation, distributing essential items such as tarpaulins, mosquito nets, jerry cans, blankets and sleeping mats, helping restore contact between families and visiting those detained in connection with the violence. At the beginning of the crisis, the CVTL collected dead bodies and helped transport the injured to hospital. 30-6-2006 Timor Leste: assistance for the displaced in rural areasSince the beginning of the crisis in East Timor in April, the ICRC and the Timor Leste Red Cross (CVTL) have provided assistance to thousands of people displaced by violence (The ICRC worldwide\Asia and the Pacific\Timor-Leste) Feature 28-2-2007 Timor-Leste: humanitarian needs persist, future remains uncertainA crisis set off within the Timor-Leste Defence Force in early February 2006 when a complaint was made about discrimination against soldiers from the western parts of the country eventually led to the walk-out of over 40 per cent of the members of the armed forces and culminated at the end of April in widespread demonstrations that claimed an unknown number of lives and drove thousands of families from their homes. In this interview for the ICRC website, outgoing head of delegation Daniel Cavoli explains what the ICRC is doing in Timor-Leste and discusses future prospects for this troubled country.
