ICRC president in Rome for talks with Italian government and Italian Red Cross
Geneva (ICRC) - Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), is in Rome for talks with Italian president Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema, Defence Minister Arturo Parisi and Under-Secretary for Health Serafino Zucchelli.

Mr Kellenberger plans to discuss the humanitarian situation in key places where the ICRC is active, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Somalia and Sudan. He will seek the support of the Italian government for the ICRC's assistance and protection activities in these places. He will also discuss cooperation between Italy and the ICRC in promoting knowledge of and respect for international humanitarian law.

The president of the Italian Red Cross, Massimo Barra, and his team will meet with Mr Kellenberger to brief him on the activities of their
National Society and to discuss collaboration between the two organizations.
