South Africa: opening of the Red Cross exhibition "150 years of humanity"
Pretoria (ICRC) - Minister of Public Enterprises Barbara Hogan will officially open an art and photo exhibition entitled "150 years of humanity: the Red Cross in Action" on 24 June at the Old Woman's Jail, Constitution Hill, Pretoria. The exhibition is being hosted by the ICRC's Pretoria Regional Delegation.

Hungary: posthumous "Righteous among the Nations" award bestowed on war-time ICRC representative
Budapest/Pannonhalma (ICRC) – The Israeli ambassador to Hungary handed over the prestigious "Righteous among the Nations" award today to Bishop Asztrik Varszegi, arch-abbot of Pannonhalma Abbey in western Hungary, in honour of Eduard Benedikt Brunschweiler, a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who arranged to shelter refugees in the abbey buildings in the final months of the Second World War. Brunschweiler died in 1987 at the age of 77.

The ICRC will need more than one billion Swiss Francs next year to fund its humanitarian operations. At 996.9 million Swiss francs, the field budget for 2009 is nearly 7 percent higher than in 2008 and the highest since 2000. The headquarters budget amounts to 169 million francs.

Victims of armed conflict face increased vulnerability in 2009
Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is asking donors for more than 1.1 billion Swiss francs (714 million euros / 939 million US dollars) to fund its worldwide efforts to help people affected by armed conflict and other violence in 2009.

Spain: ICRC president hands over Spanish Civil War documents
Geneva (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, is in Spain today to officially hand over to the government a set of copies of documents from the organization's archives relating to its activities during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
