Following the break in deliberations called by the chairman (see Conference Bulletin 3), efforts continued to find agreement on amending the draft resolution. However, by mid-evening Ambassador Strommen announced to the conference that no consensus had been found.

The chairman, Dr Mohammed Al-Hadid, therefore put the proposed amendments tabled by the Pakistani and Tunisian delegations to the vote. They were rejected and the conference then moved to the substantive draft resolution, which required a two-thirds majority. A roll-call vote was held and the resolution was adopted by 237 votes to 54 with 18 abstentions.
