2009 is definitely an exciting year for all the components of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. It is a time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino, where Henry Dunant, one of the founders of the International Committee of the Red Cross, conceived the main ideas at the origin of the Movement. It is also a time to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the creation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Lastly, let's not forget that, 60 years ago, the international community of states adopted the four Geneva Conventions, which afford protection to the most vulnerable people in times of war.

Through a global communication campaign, the ICRC, the International Federation and the National Societies want to honour these milestones by highlighting the power of individuals to make a difference. This campaign will be constructed around a clear call for action – for individuals everywhere to reach out to help others – whether in their local communities or beyond. The legacy of the battle of Solferino and Henry Dunant is that each person can make a difference.
