ICRC Annual Report 2006
The 2006 Annual Report of the International Committee of the Red Cross describes field activities out of 80 delegations worldwide; its mandate to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and its work to promote respect for international humanitarian law.

Over the year, the ICRC provided food for more than 2.5 million people and emergency supplies such as tents and blankets for more than 4 million people; its water, sanitation and construction projects catered for the needs of almost 16 million people; almost 2.4 million benefited from ICRC supported health care facilities; delegates visited 478,000 people deprived of their freedom in 2,577 places of detention in 71 countries; in collaboration with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies more than 630,000 messages were exchanged between family members separated by hostilities and other crises.

The Annual Report provides an in-depth account of the ICRC's operations in 2006, broken down by country. There is a section covering activities carried out at the Geneva headquarters and another includes operational statistics and a statement of accounts. The report includes an up-to-date list of countries party to the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.

    Increasing numbers uprooted by conflict
    Launching the ICRC's Annual Report for 2006, the organization's President, Jakob Kellenberger, has spoken of the increasing number of people uprooted by conflict and violence. As a consequence, he said the ICRC'S expenditure in 2007 may even surpass last year's record.
