Aux comités centraux des Sociétés nationales

Madame, Monsieur,

Le 1er septembre 2008, par sa circulaire n° 618, le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) invitait les comités centraux des Sociétés nationales à présenter des candidatures pour la 42e attribution de la médaille Florence Nightingale.

La médaille Florence Nightingale, la plus haute distinction internationale qu'une infirmière ou un infirmier puisse recevoir, a pour but d'honorer un courage et un dévouement exceptionnels en faveur de victimes de conflits armés ou de catastrophes, ainsi que des services exemplaires et un esprit pionnier et créatif dans les domaines de la prévention, de la santé publique et de la formation aux soins infirmiers.

Permettez-moi de vous rappeler qu’il était souligné dans la circulaire n° 618 « … que la médaille Florence Nightingale n'a pas été créée pour couronner une carrière, si méritante soit-elle, mais avant tout pour récompenser des actes de dévouement exceptionnels et reconnaître des qualités et des services exemplaires ».

Après avoir examiné avec le plus grand soin les candidatures présentées par les Sociétés nationales, à la lumière des critères mentionnés ci-dessus, le CICR a le plaisir d'annoncer que, pour cette 42e attribution, la médaille a été décernée aux personnes dont la liste suit. Les titres, qualifications et fonctions n'ayant pas toujours d'équivalence dans les diverses langues, il a paru préférable de les faire figurer tels qu'ils nous ont été communiqués par chaque Société nationale.

En comptant cette 42e attribution, ce sont 1 337 médailles qui ont été décernées à ce jour.

Les médailles et diplômes ainsi qu'une reproduction en héliogravure du portrait de Florence Nightingale seront envoyés le plus rapidement possible aux Sociétés nationales dont les candidatures ont été sélectionnées. Le CICR demande à ces Sociétés nationales de lui en accuser réception.

Le CICR serait très heureux si ces médailles pouvaient être remises à leurs destinataires cette année encore et si les comités centraux voulaient bien donner à cette cérémonie le caractère de solennité souhaité par les créateurs de cette haute distinction.

Le CICR prie les comités centraux de transmettre à cette occasion ses plus vives félicitations aux lauréates et aux lauréats de la médaille Florence Nightingale.
