ICRC deplores death of one of its surgeons

Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was dismayed to learn of the death of its Afghan staff member, Dr Salahuddin Ramez, on 25 July at Leiden University Hospital in the Netherlands. Dr Ramez died after contracting Lassa fever in Kenema, in eastern Sierra Leone, where he was working as a surgeon in a hospital funded by the ICRC. He was hospitalized in the Netherlands on 15 July while visiting his family in Europe.

Dr Ramez, who was 48 years old, was a highly motivated staff member and was much appreciated by his colleagues and patients. He joined the ICRC in 1995 and carried out missions in Pakistan, Sudan, East Timor and Sierra Leone. The ICRC is deeply saddened by his sudden death and conveys its sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
