Further meeting of Technical Sub-Committee on persons unaccounted for since the Gulf War

22-01-2003 News Release 03/05

Geneva (ICRC) – The Technical Sub-Committee is today holding its 38th session at the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Amman, Jordan.

Delegations from Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are participating in this meeting under ICRC auspices. Today’s meeting is a continuation of the discussions initiated in Amman on 8 January, when the Technical Sub-Committee resumed its work after a four-year hiatus.

The Technical Sub-Committee was set up in 1994 by the Tripartite Commission to investigate cases of persons still unaccounted for in connection with the 1991 Gulf War.

In accordance with the Technical Sub-Committee’s working procedures, which provide for the confidentiality of the discussions, the ICRC will abstain from making any statements about the meeting. The ICRC is hopeful that this ongoing process will bring about practical solutions that put an end to the anguish of families waiting to know the fate of their loved ones.
