On 7 May 2005 the International Committee of the Red Cross, acting as a neutral intermediary, facilitated the transfer of three Azerbaijani servicemen previously detained in Nagorny Karabakh and handed them over to the Azerbaijani authorities.

The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Bakou.

ICRC delegates had previously visited the servicemen, all of whom expressed the wish to return home. The operation took place, with the full cooperation of all sides, in the Agdam district of Azerbaijan.

In accordance with its mandate, the ICRC has assisted in the repatriation or transfer of 650 persons since the start of its activities in relation to the Nagorny Karabakh conflict in 1992. The ICRC stands ready to provide support for any similar operation in the future, should the need arise.
