Nigeria: historic cooperation project agreement reached with Nigerian Red Cross Society

On 27 December 2007,the ICRC and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), signed for the first time in the NRCS' 46-year history, a Cooperation Project Agreement, at the national headquarters of the NRCS.

    This agreement defines the obligation each partner has toward one other, namely NRCS objectives, implementation of activities, budgets, and reporting procedures, and for the ICRC its commitment to supporting the NRCS through financial assistance and capacity building.
 
" Such MoUs are positive instruments in bringing the two partners closer, while giving more credibility to the NRCS as a neutral and impartial disaster relief organization, " announced Mr. Jacques Villettaz, head of delegation of the ICRC. Mr Abiodun Orebiyi, NRCS Secretary General declared in turn that " by signing this Project Agreement just before the start of the New Year, we can now begin to work from a new slate. It also means we are taking on a big responsibility and commitment which we will endeavour to fulfill. "
 
The ICRC supports the NRCS in disaster relief to victims of internal violence and natural disasters, prison sanitation, family reunification and communication programs.
