United States: ICRC president to meet US authorities

Geneva/Washington (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, is in Washington for a two-day visit during which he will hold talks with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Deputy Secretary of Defence Gordon England, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, General Michael V. Hayden, the Director of the National Intelligence Agency, Admiral Michael McConnell, and senior officials.

Their talks will focus on detention-related matters, aspects of international humanitarian law that are particularly relevant in today's conflict environments, and on the humanitarian situation and ICRC activities in some of the organization's main areas of operations, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian territories, and Sudan's Darfur region.
