Republic of the Congo: Congolese team wins moot court competition

27-09-2011 News Release

Brazzaville (ICRC) – Three students representing the Republic of the Congo have won the French-speaking regional moot court competition in international humanitarian law, the body of law that regulates the conduct of armed conflict.

The event, which was organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), took place from 21 to 23 September in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

"Even in a country at peace, like the Republic of the Congo, knowledge of international humanitarian law is essential," said Bernard Metraux, who heads the ICRC mission in Brazzaville. "The fact that young people master it so brilliantly demonstrates the importance of this body of law for new generations."

The members of the winning team, Samba Moussinga Virgile Rivet, Milandou Lenda and Mouyeti Scrutin-Mabiking, were selected in a national competition involving 24 students from the National School for Administrators and Magistrates and the law schools of Marien Ngouabi University and the Free University of the Congo.

Nine French-speaking African countries – Benin, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Togo – took part in the competition, which was being held for the fourth time. The ICRC covered all teams' expenses.
