Africa Cup of Nations: over 200 Red Cross volunteers trained in emergency first aid

26-01-2012 News Release 12/11

Malabo/Libreville/Yaoundé (Equatorial Guinea Red Cross Society/Gabonese Red Cross Society/ICRC/International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) – Volunteer first-aid workers from the Equatorial Guinea Red Cross Society and the Gabonese Red Cross Society are standing by during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament, ready to take action if needed.

"With 16 national selections, 368 players, 32 matches and large numbers of spectators, we face an immense challenge," said Norma Anguezomo Ndong, an Equatorial Guinea Red Cross volunteer. "We have been specially trained for events like the Africa Cup of Nations and we are ready to help."

The training of volunteers, which has been supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, began in October 2011 with the aim of preparing them to care for people who suffer injury or fainting spells. The volunteers are also trained to organize transportation to take patients to hospital.

In Equatorial Guinea, 80 volunteers are in position in Malabo and Bata; in Gabon, 140 volunteers are covering the stadiums in Libreville and Franceville and fan venues. "Three ambulances are available in Malabo and two in Bata," said Jesus Mba Nchama, the president of the Equatorial Guinea Red Cross. "We're also going to take advantage of this opportunity to create greater awareness among the public of our humanitarian work."

The Equatorial Guinea Red Cross and the Gabonese Red Cross Society come to the aid of people in difficulty. They rely on hundreds of trained volunteers to provide basic health services and to promote humanitarian principles on a daily basis.
