Egypt: ICRC to train journalists in first aid and safety during conflicts

28-02-2012 News Release

Cairo (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate have today signed an agreement under which the ICRC will give Egyptian journalists first-aid training and introduce them to international humanitarian law and the international Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The ICRC will also be training journalists in how to stay safe while covering demonstrations and conflicts.

The ICRC's Cairo delegation will run eight courses during 2012, training 160 Egyptian journalists at the Journalists' Syndicate in Cairo. Training will be given by a group of first-aid specialists from the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), plus lecturers from the ICRC in Cairo and the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate.

The agreement was signed by Klaus Spreyermann, head of the ICRC delegation in Cairo and Mamdouh Al Waly, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate. It forms part of a wider agreement signed by the ICRC and the ERC in January, under which the ICRC will help the National Society boost its emergency response.

In addition to working together on relief operations and the training of Egyptian journalists, the ICRC and the ERC will be cooperating on the promotion of international humanitarian law.
