Indonesia: helping young people in 12 Asian countries explore humanitarian law

A total of 43 people from 12 Asian countries, working for education ministries, other government ministries, National Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies, and the ICRC are taking part.

"Exploring Humanitarian Law is an educational programme that introduces young people aged 13 to 18 to the basic rules and principles of international humanitarian law," said Frédéric Fournier, the head of the ICRC regional delegation in Jakarta. "It helps them to understand the need to respect human life and human dignity, not only in times of armed conflict but also in their daily lives."

Participants in the four-day seminar have the opportunity to share their own experiences and learn from the experiences of others using the programme in Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Timor Leste. In addition, they will visit the Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School in Jakarta to attend a classroom teaching session and be updated on current developments in Exploring Humanitarian Law.

"This is an interesting opportunity for people in countries that are considering adopting the programme, or that have just started using it, to learn from those who have more experience," said Musliar Kasim, Indonesia's deputy education and culture minister.

The Exploring Humanitarian Law programme is currently used in more than 60 countries around the world.
