Australia: Engaging with militaries to limit suffering

20 July 2017

In July, the ICRC participated in Exercise Talisman Sabre, a biennial military training exercise involving more than 30,000 Australian and United States Defence personnel.

Taking part in this major regional event allows the ICRC to bring the humanitarian perspective to the fictional conflict scenario, and to ensure that participants understand and adhere to the rules that limit suffering in war.

In this interview, the ICRC's Armed Forces Delegate for South-East Asia and the Pacific details why engagement with militaries in exercises such as Talisman Sabre plays a key role in the ICRC's efforts to protect and assist people affected by conflict around the world.
