Egypt: Surgeons enhance their knowledge of treating weapon wounds

Cairo (ICRC) – Thirty doctors will today complete a three-day seminar on surgical techniques for weapon-wounded patients in Alexandria. The seminar was organized jointly by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Curative and Critical Care Sector of the Ministry of Health and Population, and Alexandria University Hospitals.
"The ICRC has a great deal of experience treating patients with weapon-caused injuries," said Marianne Gasser, head of the organization's delegation in Cairo. "We want to share this experience with Egyptian doctors."
The event was organized as part of a series of seminars on treating weapon-related injuries and courses on emergency and trauma services. Two similar seminars held earlier this year in Cairo and Ismailia were attended by a total of 82 doctors from all over Egypt.
"These doctors are highly skilled. By attending the seminar they will enhance their ability to perform this type of surgery," said Dr Kasbar Tashdjian, the ICRC delegate in charge. "Once we finish in Alexandria, we are ready to share our know-how with doctors in still more parts of Egypt."
The ICRC has been working in Egypt intermittently since 1914. It focuses primarily on working closely with the Egyptian Red Crescent to expand the capability of that organization to respond to emergency humanitarian needs, especially by administering first aid, and on promoting the incorporation of international humanitarian law into domestic legislation, military training and academic curricula throughout the Arab world.
