Somalia: Supporting vulnerable women

01 August 2016

In Somalia, we have witnessed first-hand how supporting women has a positive ripple effect on the whole family. That is why some of our programs specifically target women as a way to build resilience within the community. One example is our cash assistance program that supports women-headed households to help families meet their essential needs. Women also receive support and encouragement to start and manage an income-generating activity so they may become self-reliant.

Key figures between January and June 2016:

  • The ICRC helped 3,652 women with cash assistance
  • The ICRC helped 736 women with conditional cash transfers
  • ICRC-supported hospitals and clinics helped more than 95,000 women
