The Law and Policy Forum brings together ICRC's various training and outreach capacities in humanitarian law and action, with a view to promoting international humanitarian law (IHL) and other relevant norms, and to influencing key actors and decision-makers on humanitarian issues of importance to the organisation. Through its different components (academic relations and research, the International Review of the Red Cross, online and onsite legal training, outreach and events, the Visitors & Conference centre), FORUM acts as a channel between the ICRC and the outside world. It carries out direct outreach activities to key external audiences, following a thematic approach and pursuing academic excellence.
Forum is offering a one-year paid traineeship entailing the following tasks: conceptualization onsite and online training, external communication and promotion, as well as contact and information management. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Legal Training Advisor, collaborating closely with other sectors within and beyond DP_FORUM.
The post holder is tasked with supporting the Training Strategy for humanitarian practitioners and, when relevant, other audiences. Main responsibilities will include:
Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of the ICRC's online legal training offer, in partnership with the ICRC's Learning and Development Division:
Bring to completion and implement the ongoing revision of the English-speaking e-learning modules on IHL (includes work on the substance, methodology and design of the modules), together with the external provider.
Develop promotional materials and organize the launch of the new modules, together with relevant colleagues.
Assist in the development of the Arabic-language version of the modules, on the basis of the English-speaking ones, and prepare for other language versions (including French)
Develop IHL pedagogical resources for various audiences:
Launch the English-speaking master presentation on IHL (master powerpoint presentation with speaking notes currently being developed, to be used by ICRC colleagues in charge of IHL promotion activities)
Develop the equivalent French-speaking version
Contribute to various aspects of the development and implementation of content for onsite training activities:
Development of thematic training programmes on IHL, including content for specific sessions, suggestions for and selection of speakers, etc.
Creation and/or update of thematic resources and teaching tools (reading lists, case-studies, simulations, etc.)
Identification of potential new guest experts and facilitators
Research for and preparation of thematic presentations and speechesPreparation of internal reports following the training activities
Research on agencies and organisations for potential partnerships
Assist the Events Manager with the logistics and organisation of onsite training activities:
Logistics before, during and after training activities
Communication with training applicants and participants
Production of training materials (participant lists and backgrounders, speakers bios, etc.)
General administrative support
Manage the communication strategy for each training activity:
Sharing of relevant information with the Outreach & Events sector, and ensure coherent and efficient communication of training activities online
Maintaining a calendar of internal and external events in relation to the Legal Training Sector
Maintain and update the ICRC intranet page related to Legal Training
Present IHL and the ICRC to various external audiences through the Visitors' Service programme
Contribute to other tasks and projects as assigned by the Head of Unit and by the Legal Training Adviser
Background and experience
Advanced university degree relevant to the position (international humanitarian law, international law, humanitarian action/policy, international relations)
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of international humanitarian law and of humanitarian affairs;
Excellent English and French language skills, including both written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of Arabic an asset;
Demonstrated ability to draft clear and concise texts for external communication;
Strong IT skills (Word, Excel, databases) together with a demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for learning how to use new IT tools and systems;
Previous experience in event management/event communication, or in teaching/pedagogy, is an advantage;
Previous experience working with contact relationship management databases is an advantage.
