24th Course in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for Humanitarian Professionals and Policy Makers

What are the international law and standards applicable during armed conflict?

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)'s 24th course on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for humanitarian professionals and policymakers will be held from 4 - 7 October at Sawela lodge, Naivasha, Kenya.

The course will focus on the international law and standards applicable during armed conflict. It is designed to help the participants to find, understand and apply the IHL framework to achieve their humanitarian objectives. It offers participants practical knowledge in IHL applicable in their fieldwork and decision-making processes.

Themes

The course will cover the following main themes:

  • Origins, structure, principles, and rules of IHL, as well as contemporary challenges and issues.
  • IHL and Pandemics
  • IHL and Counter-Terrorism Operations
  • IHL and Non-state Armed Groups
  • Relevance of IHL and other legal regimes, such as human rights law and refugee law, for the victims of armed conflict.
  • Role of humanitarian professionals in ensuring better respect for international law and standards during armed conflict.

Participants

The course is open to senior representatives of non-governmental organisations, international organisations, state agencies, and humanitarian donor agencies. Applicants should have decision-making roles in their organisations. A legal background is not required. Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, this year, the course is only open to participants who will already be residing/physically present in Kenya on 4 October 2021.
Application forms should be completed before 20 August 2021. Successful applicants will be notified by 31 August 2021. 

Selected participants will undergo a COVID test 48 hours prior to the starting of the course.

Venue:  Sawela Lodge, Lake Naivasha, Kenya.

Dates: 4- 7 October 2021

Course fees: KES 60,000

Course fees cover full board accommodation, return transport from Nairobi to Naivasha, course materials, and course activities. Upon selection, the participants will be provided with a bank account in which to deposit the course fees. Payment details will be sent to the successful course applicants.

Accommodation: Full board accommodation will be provided at Sawela Lodge, Lake Naivasha.

Transport: Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to the ICRC Regional Delegation offices on Denis Pritt Road, Nairobi. A bus will depart for Naivasha at 12pm on Monday 4 October. A bus will return to Nairobi at around 5 pm on Thursday 7 October.

Language: The course is conducted in English.

Pre-course work
A preparatory online training (approximately 5 hours) will be sent to the participants prior to the course.
