Implementation of international norms on the recruitment and participation of children in armed conflict

This event will bring together governmental representatives, representatives of the various UN agencies academic experts and experts from non-governmental organizations engaged in the protection of children in armed conflicts.
The general objectives of the meeting are:
To analyze the international legal framework applicable to the phenomenon of child soldiers and the commitments made in this regard on the universal and regional levels as well as the implication of these different regimes in the law and national practice of States.
To encourage the development and effective compliance with legislative and other national measures for implementation of the international rules relating to the recruitment and participation of children in hostilities by armed forces and/or armed groups, with a particular focus on the Optional Protocol of 25 May 2000 to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict.
In particular, the expert meeting will discuss a set of guiding principles and recommendations on the adoption of legislation or other national measures for implementation of the international rules relating to the recruitment and use of children in hostilities by armed forces and/or armed groups. A project of the Guiding Principles will soon follow.
