European Education Leadership Conference on Exploring Humanitarian Law
Vienna, 9-10 May
Hosted by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and co-organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in association with the Austrian Red Cross, the European Education Leadership Conference on Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) will take place in Vienna on 9 - 10 May 2006. The conference is expected to gather 90 representatives from EU member states, EU candidate countries, EFTA countries and the Western Balkans amongst which 35 participants from Ministries of Education and 38 participants from National Societies. 22 European countries will be represented at the event. The conference aims to:
- Foster and deepen understanding of the concepts and methodologies of the EHL programme and promote recognition of its value as a response to EU recommendations relating to Active Citizenship and development of Key Competencies through education;
- Examine the joint pledges made by the Council of the European Union and the EU National Red Cross Societies at the 28th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and discuss ways of working together with a view to including IHL / EHL in formal secondary education;
- Exchange information with countries that are currently working with EHL.
