Profession: direct marketing officer – private sector fundraising

In order to ensure the predictable funding of its operations, the ICRC has set itself the goal to increase income from private fundraising streams.  The Direct Marketing Officer will work within the Supporter Development Unit, which focuses on relations with individuals giving below $5,000 a year. Through online and offline fundraising, the team aims to increase the number of new donors, building engagement, loyalty and value with individual supporters. The Direct Marketing Officer will also play an active role developing high quality mailings which may be used by other parts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.  

Main responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Direct Marketing Manager, help to develop and implement annual  plans according to the results of previous campaigns, financial and humanitarian needs and supporters’ behaviour
  • Lead the implementation of specific campaigns, follow-up the process of creation of mailings and newsletters (copywriting, validation, editing, translation, layout, production) and draft the related thank you letters
  • Integrate direct mail campaigns with other channels, working closely with colleagues within Private Fundraising and the Communications Department
  • Support the development of advertising opportunities and media plans to promote supporter recruitment and retention
  • Help promote SMS donations and on-line donations, working closely with digital team
  • Promote the recruitment and development of regular giving
  • Implement a programme set for middle donors, according to the strategy established by the Direct Marketing Manager
  • Work with the Direct Marketing Manager to plan and implement supporter engagement events
  • Ensure that all activities accurately reflect and are sensitive to ICRC operational priorities.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A university degree or an equivalent combination of education or experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in direct  marketing or fundraising with individual supporters
  • Demonstrable track record of success in previous employment
  • Experience of working in the following areas are an asset:
    •  international humanitarian organizations
    • international fundraising
    • Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement

Required skills:

  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills. Native Swiss German an asset
  • Fluent English essential, French  desirable
  • Creative skills, with a good understanding of the production process
  • Enthusiasm, team spirit and open minded
  • Proven project management capabilities, organizational skills
  • Demonstrable capacity to influence peers
  • Personal resilience, ability to operate in complex international organizations
  • Passion for humanitarian work and strong commitment to the mission of the ICRC.

Starting date: February 2013

Minimum length of assignment: 2 years, renewable
