ICRC receives Empress and Emperor of Japan

Geneva (ICRC) - Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan visited the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on 22 May. They were received by the organization's President, Mr Jakob Kellenberger, a Delegation of the ICRC and representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
In a brief address, the President of the ICRC thanked the Emperor and Empress, their family and the people of Japan for supporting the ICRC's humanitarian work. Mr Georges-André Cuendet, Chairman of the Empress Shôken Fund, expressed the Fund's gratitude for the sum of five million yen that the Emperor and Empress donated to mark their visit to the ICRC. This Fund was set up in 1912 to encourage peacetime relief activities. It has since been financed by contributions from the Imperial family, the Japanese Government, the Japanese Red Cross Society and the people of Japan.
