Republic of the Congo: ICRC calls for swift release of two abducted staff members
11-12-2002 News Release 02/78
Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is extremely concerned about the fate of its two staff members who were abducted one week ago in south-western Republic of the Congo. Despite the various steps it has taken, the ICRC is still without news of them.
The two ICRC staff members were taken away by seven armed men on 4 December as they were assessing the needs of displaced persons in the Bouenza district, which had not been considered dangerous.
The ICRC, whose mandate includes assisting civilian victims of conflict situations, was carrying out this task in accordance with its working principles.
The ICRC strongly appeals to all parties to do everything possible to bring about the swift release of its two staff members.
