Uganda: ICRC hands over upgraded operating theatre
17-09-2009 News Release 09/177
Kampala (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has completed the renovation of an operating theatre at Kitgum Government Hospital in northern Uganda.
The organization today handed the facility over to the hospital and district authorities at an official ceremony.
The renovation was part of a three-year ICRC project to support the hospital. During this period, the ICRC also supported major construction and renovation work on the hospital's electrical, water and sewage systems and in the pharmacy, the laboratory and the maternity ward. Renovation work on two additional wards will be complete by the end of the year, when the project comes to an end.
Kitgum Government Hospital is the referral hospital for Pader and Kitgum districts and is the only secondary health-care facility providing free services for a population of over 700,000, many just returning to their villages after years of displacement due to armed conflict.
ICRC hospital administrator Janice Elloway explains that the organization also provided a wide range of medical supplies and extensive training for the hospital administration and for a number of departments, such as maternity, paediatrics and outpatients.
'' The operating theatre upgrade will improve the quality of medical care at Kitgum Government Hospital,'' said Elloway, adding that the hospital serves about 3,000 patients per month.
The three-year project at Kitgum Government Hospital is part of a broader ICRC health programme in northern Uganda, which includes support and training for 14 health centres in Kitgum, Pader, Gulu and Amuru districts.
The ICRC has been working in Uganda since 1979, protecting and assisting the victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence . As progress is made towards peace in the north of the country, and people return to their villages, the ICRC is gradually scaling down its activities in northern Uganda.
