27-02-2006 News Release 06/12
Geneva/Kuwait (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, today concluded a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
During his visit, he met the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.
Mr Kellenberger's visit, the second to the UAE since 2004, was an opportunity to inform the authorities about the ICRC's humanitarian work and the challenges facing the organization in 2006, particularly in the Arab world.
In an address to the opening session of the 34th General Assembly of the Organization of Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies, held in Abu Dhabi, Mr Kellenberger described the ICRC's main activities worldwide and in the Middle East in particular. He welcomed the recent adoption of a new protocol introducing an additional emblem and expressed his strong hope that the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, to be held in Geneva next June, would successfully promote the universality of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The ICRC president welcomed his constructive and frank dialogue both with the UAE authorities and with Arab National Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies on a range of issues. He reiterated the ICRC's firm commitment to neutral and independent humanitarian action in behalf of people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence throughout the world.
