Mexico: Red Cross broadens its medical services for migrants in the north

Mexico City (ICRC) – On 25 February the Mexican Red Cross opened a new mobile clinic providing medical care for migrants near the border with the United States. The clinic, set up in the city of Altar, in Sonora state, comprises two treatment rooms, a consultation room and an area where paramedical personnel can rest.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will assist the clinic, in particular by providing equipment and supplies. “This is a very important initiative on the part of the Mexican Red Cross,” said Karl Mattli, head of the ICRC’s regional delegation for Mexico, Central America and Cuba. “It will help alleviate the suffering of thousands of vulnerable migrants.”
The Mexican Red Cross launched its project for migrants in Sonora in 2003 by setting up a mobile clinic in Nogales and a base for its operations in Naco. To date, over 71,000 migrants have benefited from the project.
