Ethiopia: Senior staff attend prison management workshop

17-03-2014 News Release

Addis Ababa (ICRC) – Twenty senior personnel from Ethiopian prison authorities are in Addis Ababa today to start a five-day prison management course organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The course brings together senior prison staff from federal and regional prison administrations. It was developed in 2012 by the ICRC in close cooperation with the London-based International Centre for Prison Studies and focuses on identifying problems in prison management, finding solutions, developing a project plan and implementing it.

"We have good working relations with the prison administrations and are developing a sound partnership," stated Ariane Tombet, head of the ICRC in Ethiopia. "The relevance of the course to Ethiopian prison officials and the enthusiasm shown by the four Ethiopian prison personnel who attended a similar course in Geneva were what motivated us to hold the course here in Ethiopia."

The ICRC has been visiting prisons in Ethiopia for more than three decades and works with the prison authorities to improve the treatment and living conditions of inmates. The organization also trains prison personnel at various levels in prison management, health and water and sanitation.
