The situation in Gaza
In Gaza, families continue to face the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of conflict. Violence, displacement and damage to essential infrastructure have left people struggling to access healthcare, food, clean water, medicine and shelter. In Rafah, the Red Cross Field Hospital is one of the few functioning hospitals left in southern Gaza and its primary health centre is the only one operating in the governorate. Around it, families continue to face harsh living conditions, a lack of water and basic sanitation services, while medical supplies, medicines and advanced equipment remain scarce. Restrictions on what can enter Gaza make it extremely difficult for humanitarian teams to keep pace with the scale of the needs.
How the ICRC is responding in Gaza
The ICRC is working to address these urgent needs.
In Rafah, the Red Cross Field Hospital, in partnership with 16 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from around the world, has provided care since May 2024. Expanded to 72 beds in 2026, it now has strengthened surgical, emergency, maternity and paediatric services. Since opening, the hospital has carried out more than 11,300 surgeries and around 250,000 consultations, supported more than 1,200 births and provided over 19,200 physiotherapy sessions.
Across Gaza, ICRC teams also:

- + provide essential household items and cash assistance,
- + and repair and maintain critical water and sanitation infrastructure.
