Vontobel supports climate adaptation program in Niger
Since 2005, Vontobel and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have partnered to protect and assist people affected by armed conflict and other forms of violence. Your generous donations have made a significant impact worldwide, helping people affected by the conflict in Ukraine, improving health access in Yemen, supporting people with disabilities in South Sudan, and more.
This year we will be focusing on helping people in Niger adapt to the changing climate. Millions of people there are dealing with the effects of climate shocks, armed conflict and other violence. Around 80% of Niger’s population lives in rural areas and relies on agriculture for their livelihoods. So when the challenges of violence and climate change are compounded, it only makes it harder for them to feed their families.
Your donation will help make farmers more resilient to the effects of armed conflict and climate change and help them build a more sustainable livelihood. With your donation the ICRC will, among other activities:
1. Train women’s associations in milk processing and other income-generating activities ;
2. Promote sustainable and climate-adapted farming techniques;
3. Provide farmers with seeds adapted to the local climate;
4. Help farmers with land reclamation and dune fixation;
5. Renovate and construct water infrastructure.
Your donation matters. Your gift will bring help to people in need. For example:
will provide one farming family (6 people) with climate-adapted seeds; cash for tools, materials and land preparation; and training on best farming practices.
will support a cash-for-work project to help one farming household in a community reclaim their land from desertification, by creating “half-moon” water retention barriers allowing them to farm again.
will support a cash-for-work project to build 3 km of fire breaks, that will protect approximately 2 families’ farmland.
will help one woman in a women’s cooperative with a project to raise livestock to produce milk and transform it to cheese to be sold in local markets.
