We live in a war-torn world, where millions of people have their lives destroyed by conflict.

Amid the chaos and despair of conflict, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a unique sign of hope to those whose lives have been shattered by war. Our neutrality gives our staff access to conflict zones where they can save lives and help rebuild them.

Together we can make a difference: Will you be at our side to help us provide urgent and life-saving humanitarian assistance so that the people affected by conflict and war can see a future again? Together for the people in need. Let's act now!

Here are some examples of our work today:

 Afghanistan

Health-care services in Afghanistan are in urgent need of support. Thousands of health facilities have closed or are no longer working properly.

"There is too much work. We have too many newborns. It would be great if we had more doctors."

Dr Ghazanfar Shaharbanu, head of the neonatal care unit at Malalai Hospital in Kabul.

The ICRC is supporting 28 hospitals across the country, through its Hospital Resilience Project. This includes directly paying the salaries of around 10,000 health professionals. As a result, some 20 million people have access to health care.

The staff are dedicated and courageous and do their best each day to save lives, but without a functioning health system, they can often do little more than put bandages on festering wounds. Time is running out to save millions of lives in the country. Help is urgently needed.

 Somalia

In Somalia, displaced people are living in extremely precarious conditions, with no access to basic commodities and services, such as food, water and health care.

"We trucked much-needed water to displaced people in 17 villages."

Mohamed Sheikh Ahmed, head of the ICRC's office for Galmudug region.

Together with the Somali Red Crescent, we have deployed a mobile health team that provides essential health-care services to six villages. But the combined impact of drought and conflict is pushing people to the edge of survival. The needs are huge.

 Ukraine

In Ukraine, the situation is incredibly tense, dangerous and distressing for the population. Many people have no water, no food, no electricity and minimal phone connectivity. They are hiding in shelters, often for hours on end. Their first concern is for other family members, and they are desperately trying to get in touch with them.

The humanitarian needs are growing by the minute, and ICRC teams are doing all they can to mitigate the impact of the conflict on ordinary people.

So far, we have provided medical supplies to several hospitals, as well as food, water and relief items in different locations. But this is just a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed now, and what will be needed in the future.

3 good reasons to support the ICRC

1. Our historic mandate: The ICRC is a neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian organization whose mandate is to protect and assist victims of armed conflict. States conferred this mandate on the ICRC in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their 1977 Additional Protocols.

2. We talk to all sides of conflict. Why? Because it saves lives: Speaking to all parties to the conflict helps us safely reach vulnerable communities and remind armed groups they must respect schools, hospitals and health workers. We can insist civilians are protected and detainees will be treated well, and we can ensure we are accepted as a neutral and impartial organization.

3. We deliver results. In 2020, over 4 Million people received food or assistance to buy food, over 34 Million people got clean water, proper sanitary facilities or assistance improving their living conditions. In health care, 599 hospitals received supplies and other assistance, including 101 hospitals reinforced with, or monitored directly by ICRC staff, where 132736 operations were carried out and over 4 Million consultancies took place. Among other, we also reunited 1049 people, including 892 children with their families and visited 1043 places of detention.
