PURPOSE

The ICRC's regional delegation for East Asia covers the People's Republic of China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Mongolia. Our work in China focuses on securing support for the ICRC's mandate and leveraging the country's global influence to promote the protection of women, children, and other vulnerable individuals affected by conflict, by fostering greater respect for international humanitarian law. Under direct supervision of FAS Senior Advisor, the intern will provide daily support in the FAS Department.

SCOPE

  • Conduct open-source research on China's approach to IHL preparedness, including AI and other new technologies of warfare, and assisting the FAS team in compiling findings and analysis.
  • Provide technical support for VRT simulations demonstrating IHL dilemmas, including data preparation and model validation where applicable.
  • Assist in the organisation and coordination of seminars, workshops, and exchange activities, handling logistical arrangements and participant communications.
  • Support knowledge management initiatives by organizing digital resources, maintaining databases and ensuring information accessibility.
  • Perform general administrative duties as required to ensure the smooth operation of the department.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme. Preferred fields of study include Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Law (with a focus on International Law), Political Science, International Relations, or Public Policy. Candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese. Proficiency in reading English legal texts and technical documentation is essential.
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts of AI, machine learning workflows, or natural language processing. Basic legal research skills or an introductory understanding of international humanitarian law is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with strong capabilities in data organisation and visualisation.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, logical thinking and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Strong teamwork spirit and interpersonal skills are required. A genuine interest in international humanitarian affairs and a high sense of responsibility are expected.

WORKING HOURS

  • The internship requires a commitment of a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 6 months.
  • It is required to work 5 working days per week at the ICRC office.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Understand and adhere to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Understand and adhere to the ICRC Code of Conduct.
  • Understand the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Respect and observe staff regulations and security rules at all times.
  • Represent the ICRC in a professional manner at all times.
  • Develop and maintain a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers.
  • Perform all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC.
  • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary.
