Guatemala

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been present in Guatemala since 1987. In 1989, the ICRC signed a headquarters agreement with the Guatemalan government, strengthening its exclusively humanitarian activities in the country.

Our work in Guatemala

For almost four decades, the ICRC has been carrying out activities in the country to respond to the humanitarian consequences of violence, supporting the families of missing people to give them answers about the whereabouts of their loved ones and providing technical advice to the authorities.

The ICRC is currently focusing its humanitarian efforts on strengthening cooperation with the Guatemalan Red Cross and promoting international law, with the support of the regional delegation for Mexico and Central America.

The ICRC is neutral, impartial and independent in its humanitarian work.

ICRC offices supporting the region:  Our work in Guatemala is supported by our regional delegation in Mexico, which also covers the ICRC’s humanitarian action in Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and Belize. For more information, please visit the Mexico webpage.

Our work with the Guatemalan Red Cross

The ICRC works in close collaboration with the Guatemalan Red Cross to extend our humanitarian footprint in the country. These activities include mitigating the consequences of violence, helping migrants and providing Restoring Family Links (RFL) services to put separated family members back in touch with each other. The ICRC also supports the National Society in its efforts to strengthen its institutional structure.
