150 Years of Trust, Humanity and Service in Serbia and Montenegro
The Red Cross of Montenegro and the Red Cross of Serbia, two National Societies in the Western Balkans, recently marked an extraordinary milestone of 150 years of humanitarian action and service.
Throughout their history, the humanitarian action of these National Societies has supported those most in need notably during the Balkan Wars, the two World Wars, and the conflicts of the 1990s. By building and maintaining trust with their communities, their unwavering commitment continues today through community outreach and restoring family links. In addition to responding in emergencies, both National Societies promote respect for international humanitarian law.
On 28 November 2025, the Red Cross of Montenegro marked 150 years of its existence as a pillar of support to the community in its most difficult moments—wars, natural disasters, epidemics, pandemics, and social crises. Recognized as the oldest national Red Cross Society in the Balkans, it continues its mission of assistance, solidarity, and the protection of human dignity.
The jubilee honored long-serving volunteers with the Medal of the Red Cross and the Golden Sign. Mrs. Jevrosima Vukmirovic, speaking on behalf of the awardees, said:
“We feel proud, but also deeply grateful. Each of us has earned that recognition through years of dedication, humble work and faith in humanity. For me, the Red Cross has been and remains a source of strength.”
As a sign of gratitude for its historical contribution, the President of the Republic of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic awarded the organization the Order of the Montenegrin Flag, 1st degree, describing it as a “moral anchor” in the most challenging times for Montenegrin society, noting that “humanity is not measured by the size of a territory, but by the size of one’s spirit.”
In February 2026, the Red Cross of Serbia marked its 150th anniversary under the theme of “Commitment to Humanity”. The event brought together volunteers with decades of humanitarian experience, partners from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and state representatives. On this occasion, the importance of the long-standing cooperation with the ICRC was also recognized as a key element in supporting humanitarian action.
Distinguished volunteers received special recognition for their selfless dedication and lasting contributions. The voices of many volunteers were heard on that day, with one of them sharing:
“The Red Cross of Serbia has given me the opportunity to be a small but a meaningful part of someone’s hope. Volunteering has taught me humility and allowed me to help others in ways that make a real difference in our community.”
The President of the Red Cross of Serbia, Dragan Radovanovic highlighted the organization’s longevity which he said reflects a deep-rooted trust with the people, evolving from a noble idea into an indispensable part of citizens’ lives in both war and peace.
ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric congratulated and praised both the Red Cross of Montenegro and Red Cross of Serbia in remarks shared at their respective celebrations. She highlighted the key role of the Red Cross of Montenegro as a reliable voice of humanity since its origins. She also recalled the long-standing partnership and cooperation with the Red Cross of Serbia dating back to 1912.
This milestone serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of humanitarian partnership, as we remain committed to serving those most in need.
