Democratic Republic of the Congo: Mother celebrates return of lost son

05 January 2016

Ms Tabena is back with her only son after long years apart. He was one of 10 children rescued from different armies and armed groups whom the ICRC was able to return to their village in South Kivu province. His mother speaks of her joy at being reunited with her son, but also of her fears for the future.

After over 20 years of war and violence, there are few opportunities for young people in country areas of the DRC's eastern region. Some youngsters are press-ganged into armies and armed groups. Others volunteer, seduced by false promises of fame and fortune. The ICRC is helping them return to civilian life by getting in touch with their families, and going home if this is what they want.
