Thirty years after its creation, the ICRC’s Advisory Service on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) continues to play a vital role in helping States and other stakeholders to translate international obligations into national law and practice. Yet, as the world faces increasingly complex armed conflicts, implementing IHL remains as crucial as ever.
This anniversary panel will bring together distinguished jurists, government officials, and experts in international humanitarian law to reflect on how the implementation of IHL can adapt and remain effective in today’s environment. The discussion will explore how collaboration between governments, legislators, the judiciary, academia, and international organizations can strengthen respect for IHL and ensure that it continues to protect people affected by armed conflict.
Looking ahead, the event will highlight the importance of renewed political and legal commitment to national implementation —affirming that, even in challenging times, effective application of IHL is both possible and indispensable.
