About the event

With millions on the move, the world must do better. But how?

A diverse panel of leading experts will be discussing forced displacement and the refugee crisis at SOAS University of London on 7 November.

Hosted jointly by SOAS University of London, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Red Cross and the University of Exeter, the panel debate will examine key questions related to forced displacement and ask how we can provide solutions.

Speakers

  • Baroness Valerie Amos CH, director of SOAS University of London
  • Kelly Clements, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees
  • Dominik Stillhart, director of operations, International Committee of the Red Cross
  • Abdurahman Sharif, director, Somalia NGO Consortium

Moderator

Lauren Taylor, Al Jazeera English

Topic

An unprecedented 65.3 million people are forcibly displaced in the world today, including 21.3 million refugees and more than 40 million people who are internally displaced. At the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants in New York in September, nations pledged to make life better for these people.

This event revisits this issue and asks:

  • What more needs to be done?
  • Are States providing adequate protection and assistance to those in need?
  • What is life like for an internally displaced person, a migrant or refugee today?
  • Can aid agencies respond effectively to these ever more complex and protracted displacement crises?
  • How do we prevent people being forced to leave their homes and livelihoods?
