On Monday, 13 April, the Republic and Canton of Geneva and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) renewed their partnership, marked by longstanding and renewed support for humanitarian action. State Councillor Nathalie Fontanet and ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric signed a new agreement covering the period 2026–2029. The agreement will support the ICRC’s work in forgotten conflicts that struggle to mobilize sufficient funding.
“The Canton of Geneva and the ICRC today reaffirm their commitment alongside the most vulnerable civilian populations, who suffer in forgotten conflicts, far from media spotlights and political agendas. In a world where the number of armed confrontations has never been as high since the Second World War, it is our collective responsibility to maintain neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian action. This partnership of more than twenty years alongside the ICRC is not only a financial commitment on the part of the cantonal authorities. It is the expression of a shared conviction and the will to act in the face of the suffering of others.”
- Nathalie Fontanet, State Councillor
"This renewed agreement with the Republic and Canton of Geneva comes at a critical time. Conflicts are driving unprecedented humanitarian needs while the resources to respond are under increasing strain. This financial support reflects not only Geneva’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian action but also its consistent support for civilians caught in protracted conflicts that are too often neglected by the international community."
- Mirjana Spoljaric, ICRC
