Strengthening Access to Water Amidst Conflict in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique

Strengthening Access to Water Amidst Conflict in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique

The case study highlights the impact of climate change and the consequences of conflict on water access in Mozambique, particularly in Cabo Delgado. Since 2017, the internal conflict have displaced over 542,000 people and destroyed critical infrastructure, severely limiting access to safe water. Frequent climate shocks, such as cyclones, floods, and droughts, have further exacerbated water scarcity and health risks, including the spread of diseases like cholera and malaria. In response, the ICRC and Mozambique Red Cross rehabilitated water systems, drilled boreholes, and implemented solar-powered supplies. Community participation, training, and collaboration ensure resilience, sustainability, and improved public health.
