Chad

The ICRC has been present in Chad since 1978. We work to ensure people are protected from the consequences of armed conflict and other violence in line with international humanitarian law (IHL). Thanks to our neutrality, we can reach the most vulnerable people in the country and provide them with assistance.

Des volontaires du Croissant-Rouge soudanais et des habitants de la communauté sont assis ensemble sur une bâche bleue, à l’ombre d’un arbre, discutant près d’un véhicule du CICR garé à proximité dans la région de Bara, au Soudan.

Our work in Chad

We support communities that have been affected by armed conflict, in particular in the Lake Chad region, for example by vaccinating livestock, providing farming equipment and seed, improving access to water and sanitation, and ensuring people receive the protection they are entitled to under the rules of IHL.

We help refugees in eastern Chad who have fled the violence in Sudan to find their loved ones or reconnect with them by phone. We provide psychosocial support and refer victims of sexual violence to the right care providers. We also help local authorities to improve people’s access to water and sanitation, in particular at transit sites.

Finally, we visit places of detention and provide training in IHL for the authorities, armed forces and members of academia.
