Four years after the Second World War, the ICRC convinced States to revise the laws protecting wounded soldiers and prisoners of war and to create a fourth Geneva Convention for the protection of civilians. Jean Pictet led a team of legal experts in the drafting of the 1949 Conventions. Among them was René-Jean Wilhelm. In this video, he and historian François Bugnion look back on this milestone in the history of international humanitarian law.
