Iraq / Saudi Arabia: Remains of Saudi serviceman repatriated under ICRC auspices

Geneva (ICRC) – The mortal remains of a Saudi serviceman who died following an incident on the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia that took place during the night between 24 and 25 August 2001 were repatriated this morning, 26 September, under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The operation, which took place at the border post of Judaidah between the two countries, was carried out with the full cooperation of the Iraqi and Saudi Arabian authorities.

The government of Iraq had asked the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary in returning the remains to the Saudi authorities. In order to facilitate the repatriation, the ICRC made representations to the authorities in Baghdad and Riyadh.
