ICRC condemns Lima attack

22-03-2002 News Release

Lima (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) strongly condemns the last night's attack on the El Polo shopping centre near the United States embassy in Lima, in which nine people were killed and over 30 injured.

Any such indiscriminate attack runs contrary to the basic principles of humanity as it targets people going about their daily lives, causes great suffering and spreads terror among the population as a whole.

A neutral, impartial and independent organization whose work is based on humanitarian principles, the ICRC endeavours to alleviate suffering wherever the circumstances require. It will give emergency assistance to the victims of this attack and their families.

The ICRC expresses its sympathy to the injured and its sincere condolences to the families of those killed.
