13-04-2004 News Release 04/27

Geneva(ICRC) – Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), arrived in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 12 April and held talks there today with His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, deputy crown prince of Abu Dhabi and chief of staff of the UAE armed forces, and His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, UAE minister of information.

The ICRC president also met with the chairman of the board of directors and other senior officers of the Red Crescent Society of the UAE.

Mr Kellenberger’s visit illustrates the importance the ICRC attaches to its relationship with the States of the Arabian peninsula and its desire to develop and enhance dialogue and cooperation with them. Discussions focused on the main humanitarian challenges the ICRC is currently facing in various parts of the world. They also dealt with the relevance of international humanitarian law and the obligation that States party to the Geneva Conventions have to ensure respect for it.

Mr Kellenberger will now proceed to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the State of Qatar, where he will hold talks with the leaders of the two countries, high-level government officials and senior officers of the National Red Crescent Societies.

This visit is part of an ongoing dialogue between the ICRC and the countries of the Middle East. Mr Kellenberger visited Iraq in May 2003 and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in October 2003.
