ICRC president visits Arabian peninsula

Geneva(ICRC) - Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today concluded his tour of the Arabian peninsula by visiting Qatar, where he met His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, crown prince of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, prime minister, and His Excellency Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, minister of State for foreign affairs. He also met Her Highness Sheikha Aisha Bint Khalifa Al-Thani, president of the Qatar Red Crescent Society, and senior officials of the Society.

Before visiting Qatar, Mr Kellenberger had been in Bahrain, where he had talks with His Highness Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, crown prince and general commander of the Bahrain Defence Force, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Mubarak Al-Khalifa, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, and His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalid Al?Khalifa, deputy prime minister, minister of Islamic affairs and president of the Bahrain Red Crescent Society, along with senior officials of the Society.

Jakob Kellenberger's visit illustrates the importance the organization attaches to its relationship with the States of the Arabian peninsula and its desire to develop and enhance dialogue and cooperation with the countries of this region. That dialogue has focused on the main humanitarian challenges facing the ICRC today. The relevance of international humanitarian law and the obligation on States party to the Geneva Conventions to ensure respect for it were also on the agenda.

The ICRC president paid a similar visit to the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
