ICRC participates in World Economic and World Social forums

26-01-2005 News Release No. 05/05

Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will be represented at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Social Forum (WSF), which both begin today.

The ICRC president, Mr Jakob Kellenberger, will be in attendance at the WEF in Davos, Switzerland, while the ICRC regional delegate for southern South America and Brazil, Mr Michel Minnig, will be present at the WSF in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

A sound understanding of globalisation and its impact on communities in conflict-prone areas is relevant to the ICRC in devising appropriate responses to humanitarian crises. The ICRC will seize the opportunities offered by these fora to discuss the consequences of globalisation for conflict situations and the meaning of global responsibility from a humanitarian standpoint.
