Destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam: humanitarian needs and Red Cross response

The humanitarian consequences of the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam prove how damage to critical infrastructure can plunge entire communities into despair and devastate civilian lives.

The ICRC supports the Ukrainian Red Cross and local authorities to help people affected by the flooding. The response was immediate, and their teams have already evacuated hundreds of people from the area.

The ICRC’s primary focus is on access to water. Our experts work with the National Red Cross Society and local authorities, and we will supply goods and equipment over the coming days.

Access to clean water and information about the risks posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war will be a lifeline over the coming days and weeks and the ICRC will continue assisting the authorities and communities in recovering from this tragedy.
