Mali : farming the prison land

75 Km from Bamako, in Keniekoroba, convicts of the penitentiary centers of the region, cultivate 30 hectares (70 acres) of farmland. This project of penitentiary fields contribute to improving the nutrition of convicts and their detention conditions, it also eases their future reintegration in the society.

ICRC, in partnership with the Ministry of Justice of Mali, provides since two years, a financial and technical support to this project. Under the supervision of the agronomists of ICRC and thanks to the donation of seeds, fertilizer, herbicides and farm implements, the 30 hectares (75 acres) now produce corn, niébé beans and peanut.
